SMTM5 Concert Tour – Chicago Show Review!

Okay so this is supposed to be an “official review” but I apologize in advance if it devolves into unorganized rambling about how amazing the show was.

The show was almost a week ago and I have been so busy with grad school that I have to keep stopping and reminding myself that I actually saw BeWhY perform. LIVE. IN THE FLESH.

The show was held in the Rosemont Theater (a great venue) and my friends and I had superb seats in the front row of the balcony, smack dab in the center.

Gil and Mad Clown opened the show, followed by Dok2 and The Quiett, then CJamm and Zion.T and Kush and last but not least Simon D, Gray and BewhY.

Gil and Mad Clown were the perfect start to the show. I was soooo pleased to hear some Leessang classics live.

Seeing Dok2 and The Quiett together on stage for a few songs completely made up for my missing the Illionaire show in Chicago a few months ago. I don’t think Dok2 gets enough credit as a rapper. He’s a great performer! I would argue that he and BewhY had the best performances of the night.

I can now say that I truly believe Illionaire songs are best experienced live. I was not impressed with ‘Beverly 1LLs’ when Myundo and Superbee did it on SMTM5 this summer but the song performed live was so good. Dok2 and The Quiett performed a good mix of old and new songs – three of my favorites being ‘내가’, ‘1 Life 2 Live’ and of course ‘연결고리 (YGGR)’.

My friends and I kept saying we couldn’t believe Kush came all the way to the U.S. to perform ONE SONG but at least ‘Machine Gun’ was lit.

I’m still not over Zion.T. He said that it was his first time in Chicago and I hope he’ll be back soon. He seemed really touched when the audience sang along with the chorus of ‘Yanghwa Bridge’.That was one of my favorite moments of the entire show.

CJamm was just as laid back as you’d expect. He made a valiant effort to speak a little English but when fans yelled things at him from the crowd he would comically respond “Sorry, I don’t understand you.”

I didn’t realize until his performance how covered he had to be on SMTM because of Korean television censorship. Not only was he wearing short sleeves for much of his performance but the shirt came off eventually. I knew he had a lot of tattoos but DANG…he has a LOT of tattoos.

He may not be the most dynamic performer but your boy can rap. I was really sad that he didn’t perform ‘MM’ but ‘Beautiful’ was really good live. He also performed ‘Let It Be’, ‘$insa’ and ‘Wanted’.

Simon D is always a highlight. The crowd cheered the loudest for him when he came out on stage. He announced that there will be another AOMG Tour next year so be on the lookout for that! One of my favorite songs from this season was ‘쌈박자 (XamBaqJa)’ and he and BewhY killed it.

BewhY is just the most earnest, endearing person. He shared with us that his goal is to someday win a Grammy. He interacted a lot with the audience throughout his time performing.

I thought his English was really good but Simon D decided to join him on stage to “translate” the things he was saying. It was hilarious because the only thing Simon D said was “He really likes Chicago pizza”. At one point Simon D addressed the audience, pointing to BeWhy and asking, “Isn’t he handsome??” and then added, “No plastic surgery. Natural face”.

I was a bit disappointed that BewhY and CJamm didn’t perform anything together. Their collaboration track ‘Puzzle‘ came out not too long ago but apparently it wasn’t on the set list.

I’m looking forward to BewhY creating more music and returning to the States with his very own tour in the future!

Shout out to my friends, the real MVPs, for capturing video from the show! Check them out below!
